Through a program sponsored by the Luzerne/Schuylkill Workforce Investment Board (L/S WIB) and PA CareerLink®, students and adults alike were able to learn more about local jobs in the healthcare field.

L/S WIB and the PA CareerLink® sponsored an Education and Health Career Fair on Wednesday at the PA CareerLink®, Wilkes-Barre Office, 32 E. Union St. The event was part of the state’s Health Careers Week 2011, an initiative that informs the public about healthcare careers.

The fair featured information about careers in health care and education as related to healthcare occupations.

L/S WIB Executive Director Lucyann Vierling said, “State projections continue to show an increase in career opportunities in health care. This event was planned to show young people and adults the benefits of careers available right here in Greater Wilkes-Barre and the northeastern Pennsylvania region.”

She noted that the Wilkes-Barre fair was designed to help attendees learn more about different careers in addition to the educational requirements for healthcare jobs.

Representatives from Johnson College of Technology, Wilkes-Barre Career and Technical Center’s Practical Nursing Program, Fortis Institute, King’s College, Wilkes University, Keystone Job Corps Center’s Practical Nursing Program, Luzerne County Community College, Geisinger Health Network, Penn State University and Allied Services participated in the event, providing information on their organizations and answering questions about careers in education and health care. Additionally, students from the Practical Nursing Program at the Keystone Job Corps Center offered free blood pressure screenings during the fair.

L/S WIB brings together business, industry, education, economic development and community organizations to participate with the public workforce system to identify workforce challenges and develop strategies and solutions to address those challenges. The organization’s mission is to ensure a demand-driven world-class workforce system aligned with economic development and education.
